I just completed the first of two paintings commissioned by a client in Jerusalem – the first in my new studio. A watercolor of the Dome of the Rock, otherwise known as the Mosque of Omar, and entitled “Shadows on Temple Mount – Haram esh-Sharif”.

I must have visited the Temple Mount nearly a hundred times over a nine year period, just to enjoy the peace and quiet in a corner of a bustling city and take in the lovely architecture. The stones complement beautifully against the blue Armenian tile work accenting in various places. The Mosque of Omar looked much better with a lead roof, before someone came up with the idea of making a ‘golden’ dome in pretty crude anodized aluminium in the 1960′s. It was replaced by a better product, utilizing real gold, by a N. Irish company in 1993. I still prefer the lead as much more pleasing to the eye and less ostentatious. I try and subdue it a little in my paintings, almost making it fade into the sky, which is so much in harmony with the color of the tiles, especially.

Adding further interest in the composition is the distinctive pigmentation of the Bougainvillea.

I enjoy commissions. There is an edge to the work through engaging with clients over subjects with which they have a common interest with the artist. Reminds me of the quality time spent in similar relationships as an architect, many years ago.

In the closing phase now – just getting my painting table together and will be back in the throes of a new chapter with new work.

I value this opportunity to be in a new place with new beginnings – the theme for the Brookgreen Gardens show will be Butterflies! So I am considering migrating Monarchs for my next painting. I can so easily identify with migrating tendencies – a lifelong pilgrimage!

I have been rather busy preparing my new studio – down to floor level today. Hopefully back to painting watercolors again soon and preparing for “Artist’s Under the Arcade” at Brookgreen Gardens, June 2-3 – part of their Butterfly and Art Festival. That should be fun as it will involve some lovable subjects; impressions of flowers and butterflies.

Painting Floors

I have developed a particular interest in Monarch Butterflies and am quite taken by their migrating abilities – consisting of up to 50 miles covered each day as they travel south along the coast.

I am not the only new neighbour here – while kitting out my new studio I saw these young cardinals with their wide-open feeding-funnels pointing straight up at me! Opened up just like a flower, I am wondering whether I have found a new painting subject? The mother doesn’t seem to be too bothered by my presence – though appeared to be a bit thick parking her nest on the top of an abelia shrub for all the world to see, including hawks and snakes.

Hopefully they will get clearance for take off in another five days.

I delivered 41 paintings now being exhibited in Wilkes Art Gallery in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Always a relief to get things finished and hanging, and enjoy the reception.

Now I am back in Pawleys Island taking a short break before embarking on fitting out my new studio. Hidden in a dense and jungly part of the area, it should provide the necessary quiet moments to keep on painting and, perhaps, some teaching workshops.

If you are close to North Wilkesboro you might like to visit the gallery?

Magnolias may appear white, but their shadows have colors we often miss. Shadows which reflect other reflected light. In fact, we don’t see light! But, we do see the effect of light on the surface of things. There is a synonym here. God is Light! We don’t see Him but we see the effect of Him on all people and things – even the unbeliever requires Him as the object of his/her rebellion.

Natural light lets us see things and this magnolia appeared for a very short time.
